Hi, I’m Edikan. I’m a designer and artist who lives and works in Lagos, Nigeria, where I work as a Product Designer.

In February 2024, I published “four rectangles + one circle,” a project that took seven months to complete and is very dear to me. This project was a journey of self-exploration and creativity where I wanted to push my boundaries and do something new and exciting.

How did “four rectangles + one circle” come about?
I was going through a period where I felt drawn towards trying something new. I was studying shape compositions and Bauhaus poster designs at the time, and I wanted to test my skills in my work.

The project started out with me moving some rectangles around a blank canvas, trying to find something that fits. Eventually, I settled on a colour scheme and added a circle to the compositions; then, everything started to take shape.

After creating enough compositions, I thought to include some form of transition to show the different states. That led to creating a stop-motion animation video that took a really long time, but the outcome was absolutely worth it. The final touches were my friends letting me use their article and soundtrack to complete the project.

What is your biggest takeaway from “four rectangles + one circle”?
I think the biggest lesson I learnt while creating this project was that big things can come from the most little things, and small ideas can grow beyond your wildest dreams.

“four rectangles + one circle” definitely represents the best parts of myself. When I started working on the project, I was in a place where I constantly questioned the point of existence. I kept on asking myself why we bothered fighting so much and running so fast when, at the end of the day, very little actually matters.

As I kept asking those questions, it dawned on me that the world is what it is, and the only thing we could possibly do is make the most of the time we have here. And that’s what I plan to do every single day.

The art that I create sometimes exists and other times it does not exist, but it always seeks to excite and surprise.

My work goes against the current, that is, it goes in the correct current and is full of desire for life. When I think about it and create it, I make it do things and tell stories. That invites you to dream, to listen, to excite. I want to do very different, unique, not yet invented things that at some point have unlimited power to achieve everything.

I constantly work on it, I know that the keys are in my head and nothing upsets me or distracts me. Everything is anecdotal. And if people ask me what I am, I always answer that I am not. I just do things. I do. And I am passionate about everything I do and that people discover it, understand it, enjoy it, love it and remember every detail.

My work is always on time for everything. It always wants to be the first to make those who look at it happy. In it, only beauty, joy, party nights and sea mornings fit. It is tireless because it knows that there is no end, that one day it will be another work, it will reinvent itself with other stories and other perspectives and it will be able to conquer everything again. My art wants everything, it encompasses everything, it is for everyone and it is forever.
